Common Questions

Straight Answers About Lessons, Safety, and Gear

A few things people usually ask before their first session or when they bring in a board for a check. If your question is not here, our team replies quickly through the contact page.

I have never surfed before. Where do lessons start?

Every beginner session begins on the sand with a short tidal briefing and a look at the day's wave conditions. You learn how to read the surf zone, practice pop-ups on the beach, and then head into the water with a soft-top board. Small groups mean your instructor is close by for the whole session, not just at the start.

What should I bring for a lesson or a rental?

Bring a swimsuit, a towel, and reef-safe sunscreen. Rash guards and soft-top boards are included in lessons and available for hire. If you have your own wetsuit, feel free to use it; otherwise, we can point you to a suitable option for local water temperatures.

Are the junior holiday clinics suitable for complete beginners?

Yes. The junior clinics group children by age and comfort level, so a first-timer is never pushed beyond their ability. Sessions mix beach games, balance drills, and short wave rides in the shallows. The goal is water confidence, not performance, and instructors keep a close eye on each child throughout.

How do the women-only mornings work?

These are relaxed group sessions with a female instructor, capped at a small number of participants. They follow the same safety structure as our regular lessons but allow extra time for questions and practice. You can join as a complete beginner or book a board and paddle with others at your level.

Can you repair my board even if I did not buy it from you?

Yes. We handle dings, fin box issues, and pressure dents on soft-top and fibreglass boards. Drop the board off at the kiosk and we will assess it before quoting a repair time. Most small dings are fixed within a few days, depending on the current workload.

What does a tidal safety briefing cover?

Before any session, we explain the local rip current patterns, sandbar shifts, and how the tide affects the break that day. You also learn the hand signals used in the water and what to do if you get caught in a rip. This is not a generic talk; it is specific to the beach where you are surfing.

Real feedback from the beach community

We don't chase numbers. These are the words of parents, first-timers, and regulars who paddle out with us between Muizenberg and the Strand.

"My daughter was terrified of waves after a rough day at Muizenberg. The junior clinic instructors were patient, kept the group small, and turned her fear into excitement. She now asks every weekend if we can go surf."

Nadia van Wyk

Mother of two, Muizenberg local

"I joined the women-only morning session not knowing anyone. The tidal safety briefing before we went out made all the difference. I finally understood how to read the rip current near the pier instead of just avoiding it."

Lindiwe Mokoena

Beginner surfer, attending since January

"Brought my soft-top in for a fin box repair before a weekend trip. They had it ready in two days and also patched a pressure ding I hadn't noticed. Fair price, honest advice, and the kiosk stocked the reef-safe sunscreen I needed."

Ruan Botha

Weekend surfer, Strand

What keeps people coming back

Our instructors hold current surf coaching and first aid certifications, and every session starts with a beach conditions check. We keep group sizes to a maximum of six so you get real feedback on your pop-up, not just a push into the next wave.

What our surfers say

Real progress, measured in confidence

We don't promise overnight barrel rides. We track small wins: standing up for the first time, reading a rip current, or simply feeling calm when the water gets bigger. Here's what that looks like from the people who've been through it.

I'd been scared of deep water since a childhood incident. The women-only morning sessions changed that. By week three I was paddling out past the break without checking over my shoulder every ten seconds. My instructor never pushed, just explained the tide and let me find my own pace.

Naledi M.

Joined the women's surf mornings, Muizenberg

Sent my two boys to the junior holiday clinic during the July break. They came home tired, sun-kissed, and talking non-stop about how to spot a rip current. The safety briefing at the start made me feel at ease as a parent — they learned respect for the ocean, not just how to pop up.

Pieter van der Merwe

Father of two junior camp surfers, St Francis Bay

I brought in my old soft-top for a repair before a weekend trip. They patched the deck, checked the fin boxes, and gave me honest advice on whether it was worth fixing at all. No upsell, just practical guidance. That's why I keep coming back for rental boards too.
