Common Questions Before You Paddle Out

Straight answers about lessons, equipment, and what to expect on the day. If your question is not covered here, our team at the kiosk is happy to help.

I have never surfed before. Which session should I book?

Start with a beginner group lesson. These run in small groups of no more than six people and cover beach safety, how to read the shore break, and basic paddling technique before you stand up. Most first-timers are riding white water by the end of the session.

What do I need to bring for a lesson?

Bring a swimsuit, a towel, and reef-safe sunscreen. We supply the soft-top board, leash, and rash guard. In cooler months, a light wetsuit top is recommended, and we have a few available to borrow on a first-come basis.

Are your instructors certified?

Yes. Every lead instructor holds a recognised surf coaching qualification and current first aid certification. Junior clinics and women-only mornings are run by the same certified team, with an extra coach on the beach when the group is full.

Can I rent a board even if I am not taking a lesson?

Absolutely. Soft-top boards and a few performance longboards are available for hourly or half-day hire. Before you head out, we do a quick board check and confirm the day's tide and wind conditions so you know what to expect.

What happens if the surf conditions are poor on the day of my booking?

Safety comes first. If the swell is too big or the current is unsafe for beginners, we will reschedule your session at no extra cost or offer a full refund. We make this call about an hour before the lesson starts and let you know by phone.

Do you repair boards that were not rented from you?

Yes, we repair dings and fin box damage on soft-top and fibreglass boards. Drop the board off at the kiosk and we will assess it within a day. Most small dings are ready within two to three days depending on the resin cure time.

What Our Surf Lessons and Beach Services Actually Include

Before you book a session or drop off a board for repair, here are the practical terms that shape how we work. These notes cover lesson structure, equipment hire, safety briefings, and what happens if the swell does not cooperate.

Lesson Group Size and Skill Levels

Beginner and intermediate sessions run with a maximum of six participants per instructor. This keeps everyone within reach of guidance and lets us adjust the plan when conditions shift. If you have surfed before, tell us during booking so we can match you with the right group.

Equipment Hire and Condition Checks

Soft-top boards and rash guards are checked before every hire. We ask that you return equipment within the agreed time so the next visitor has a board ready. A quick rinse and visual inspection on return helps us keep the fleet safe for daily use.

Tidal Safety Briefings

Every lesson and junior clinic starts with a short briefing on local tides, rip currents, and the designated swimming zone. These briefings are tailored to the day's conditions and are not optional. If you arrive late, we may ask you to wait for the next session rather than miss the safety talk.

Board Repairs and Turnaround Time

Minor dings and fin box repairs are usually completed within three to five days, depending on the resin cure time. For larger structural work, we will give you an estimate after the initial inspection. Drop-offs are accepted during opening hours, and we will call you when the board is ready.

Weather and Session Cancellations

If conditions are unsafe, we will reschedule your lesson at no extra cost. This decision is made by the lead instructor on the day, based on wind, swell size, and rip current activity. We do not offer refunds for sessions cancelled due to weather, but your booking remains valid for any future date within six months.

For women-only mornings and junior holiday clinics, places are limited. A booking confirms your spot, so please let us know at least 24 hours in advance if you cannot attend. This gives someone on the waiting list the chance to join.
