Why Bale Kami exists
We started Bale Kami because most surf lessons treat the ocean as a place to conquer. We see it differently: the shoreline is where confidence grows, fear gets named, and families find a shared rhythm. Every session we run is shaped by that idea.
Our instructors are certified, local, and patient. They teach small groups how to read tides, respect rip currents, and paddle with purpose. The result is not just better surfing — it is a safer, calmer relationship with the sea that lasts long after the lesson ends.
Every session starts with a tidal briefing and ends with a debrief. No heroics, just clear decisions.
We cap every session so each surfer gets hands-on feedback, not shouted instructions from the shore.
Reef-safe sun protection, board repairs, and beach cleanups are part of our routine, not an afterthought.
Junior holiday clinics, women-only mornings, and open sessions mean there is always a group that fits your pace and your comfort level.
We know which sandbanks hold up at low tide and which corners get messy in a north wind. That intel shapes every lesson plan.
Soft-top boards, rash guards, and rental equipment are checked before every use. Repairs are done on-site so a small ding never ends your day.
The people behind the boards
Bale Kami started with two instructors and a stack of soft-tops borrowed from a garage in Fourietown. Today the team is still small on purpose — every coach lives within a few kilometres of the beach, surfs the same breaks you will, and teaches the way locals actually read the ocean.
Head Coach & Junior Camp Lead
Maya grew up surfing the point breaks between Muizenberg and Kalk Bay. She holds an ISA Level 2 coaching certificate and has spent the last eight seasons running junior holiday clinics. Her sessions focus on reading rip currents and wave zones before anyone paddles out.

Ocean Safety & Tidal Briefings
A former lifeguard with the local municipal team, Thabo runs our tidal safety briefings and women-only morning sessions. He knows every sandbar shift on this shoreline and teaches surfers how to spot a changing current before it becomes a problem.

Board Repair & Equipment Hire
Liam keeps the rental fleet rideable and handles ding repairs from the kiosk workshop. He also tests every rash guard and soft-top that comes into stock, so the gear you hire has already been checked for the morning swell.

The South African shoreline changes with every winter storm. Sandbanks move, rips appear where there were none last month, and a beach that was gentle in the morning can turn challenging by midday. Our instructors brief every group on the day's conditions — not a generic safety talk, but what is actually happening at the break you are about to enter. That is the difference between a lesson and a session that builds real water confidence.
Ocean Safety & Surf Basics
Straight answers about lessons, equipment, and how we keep every session safe on our stretch of the South African coast.
Start with our beginner wave riding session. It covers beach safety, reading the shore break, paddling technique, and your first pop-up attempts in waist-deep water. Small groups of no more than six people, so you get plenty of direct feedback from a certified instructor.
A swimsuit, a towel, and reef-safe sunscreen. We provide soft-top boards, rash guards, and wetsuits depending on the season. If you have your own board, bring it along for a quick check before your morning paddle — we'll look at the fins, leash, and any dings that need attention.
Our instructors check the tide charts, wind direction, and local sandbar movement each morning. The beach break here shifts with the seasons, so we pick the safest takeoff zone for the group's level. If conditions are too messy for beginners, we reschedule or move to a more sheltered spot nearby.
Yes. Junior clinics run during school holidays and focus on water confidence through games, balance drills, and short rides in the shallows. Women-only mornings are relaxed group sessions with a female instructor, designed for beginners who want a supportive space to learn at their own pace.
Absolutely. We handle ding repairs, fin box replacements, and leash attachments for soft-tops and fibreglass boards. Drop your board at the kiosk before 9am and most small repairs are ready by the afternoon, so you don't miss the evening glass-off.
Before any session, we walk through how to spot rip currents, what to do if you get caught in one, and where the safe swimming zones are for that day's tide. It takes about ten minutes and is included in every lesson and hire. If you're surfing on your own, you can join the briefing for free — just ask at the kiosk.
